CASTELO DA MAIA

Oporto, PORTUGAL
Honourable Mention International Competition. With Joan Massagué
Project year 2014
The intervention begins with the premise of a place with a tonality defined by a pre-existing: the current industrial buildings in disuse.
The structure of these buildings is for another time, other needs.
The proposal aims at these pre-existing to a new time / program, and put them in value, generating this time a virtue. It aims to highlight the atmosphere as a fundamental and intrinsic value of the place.
Understanding the fabric of Garden City, to reorganize the disaggregated structure of the pieces, and compact the building mass.
It’s when adopting different organizational buildings to fit the urban fabric that surrounds hierarchies, to function as a public building, a building for the site.
A new perimeter mass defines this new limit, “between” the new gardens geometrized by two axes, which pass through the building. This mass hides the ruins of colorful contemplative gardens as an oasis; access after the ritual to prepare visitors to experience the place.
Three main pre-existing define three courtyards that structure the project in experience and functionality.
The mass inside perimeter adapted to the geometry of the pre-existing, and host three main programs: Space for Culture, Commerce, and Private.
The piece geometry means the city and empties into the corners to recognize the limits, create a garden access, and respond to program vehicles.
